Deer Hunting in the Powder River Breaks

Our hunts for both mule and whitetail deer and elk take place on private ranches that encompass more than 100 sq. miles in and around Powder River County in Southeastern Montana. The hunting terrain is made up of steep, shale ridges with cedar and pine canyons. We also hunt on rolling hills and plains with more open canyons and draws. Early season hunts can be combination hunts or you may prefer to hunt just for trophy deer during the rut in November.

We book up to 2-4 hunters for a five day hunt. You are welcome to apply for the antelope license as well and should you draw, there will be no increase in the price of the hunt.

Archery Mule Deer, Whitetail, Elk and Antelope

Mitchell Outfitting offers archery combo hunts for either mule deer and antelope or whitetail and antelope during the month of September. The miles of prime river bottoms offer the opportunity to take whitetail or mule deer from the same stands or blinds.

This past year we had 90% shooting opportunities with Pope and Young deer and antelope taken. Our success rate in 2006 and 2007 was 100% on archery antelope.  In 2008 success was 80%.

 GREAT SAVINGS ON ARCHERY WHITETAIL!!

Our whitetail herd is bursting at the seams! We control about 13 miles of the Powder River alfalfa bottoms.  WE NEED WHITETAIL ARCHERY HUNTERS! We are dropping our prices from $2,000 to only $1,750 for a 6 day hunt.  Or a whitetail and antelope combo hunt for $2,000 for a 6 day hunt.  You can usually buy up to two whitetail doe tags over the counter.  The price per tag is about $75 so we encourage you to take the whitetail does at no extra cost.  The ranchers are wanting the whitetail numbers greatly reduced.

Archery mule deer prices will be $2,000 for mule deer only and $2,500 for mule deer and antelope combo.  You are welcome to take a mule deer or whitetail.  The deer license is guaranteed at $1,100 with a March 15th deadline.  Antelope license is $205 with a June 1st deadline.

HUGE SAVINGS ON RIFLE WHITETAIL!!

Because of the high population of whitetail and the current state of the national economy, Mitchell Outfitting is giving a great discount also on our rifle whitetail hunts.  The price will be reduced from $4,000 for a 2x1 hunt to $3,000.  The 1x1 hunt will be reduced from $4,500 to $3,500.  License price info is $1,100.  Contact us for details.

For 2009, we will cut our rifle mule deer hunters down to 2-4 per week for a total of 12-14 clients.

NEW FOR 2009

We have changed our water hole Archery Antelope hunts from a 6 day hunt to a 4 day hunt.  Most antelope clients were done by the second or third day of the hunt.  Due to this change, the price for the hunt will go from $1,795 down to $1,595 for a 4 day hunt.  License price is $205 with the deadline being June 1st.

Opening day for archery antelope season has been moved to August 15th.  Hunts will be conducted from the water hole blinds.  In 2008 we were 80% successful on our archery antelope.  This was the first time in three years that our success rate was below 100%.  Seventy five percent of the bucks taken were Pope & Young candidates.   This is a very game rich area with plenty of action possible.  Our archery deer hunts start the first part of September.  The hunts are conducted from ladder stands, water hole blinds and natural brush blinds set up along trails coming from alfalfa fields to bedding areas.  If you have your own safety harness, you are welcome to bring it.  We do have some available.  You may see whitetail or mule deer from the same stand.  Your license is good for either one.  You may add antelope to make it a combo hunt.  We concentrate on the deer early mornings and evenings and focus on antelope midday at the water holds.  I try to set up the stands 20-35 yards from existing trails or water.  See pricing for all archery hunts below.

Archery Water Hole Antelope (4 days) - $1,595

For our archery antelope hunts we have 12-15 blinds at waterholes and fence crossings.  These are set up 25-30 yards from the water.  Your shots could be further if the antelope hangs up further out.  Bring cool clothing for setting in the blinds.  The temperature can be 90-105 degrees.  Shorts work well.  You will have a lawn chair to sit in.  We provide you with a large cooler filled with drinks and food.  The days are very long in August and September (15-18 hours).  Brings some books to read since you may spend many hours waiting for the right buck to come to water.  Fixed, bladed broadheads work best for shooting through the mesh on the blind windows.  This hunt is not for the faint of heart.  You must be a dedicated bow hunter to do this hunt!  We had a 100% success rate on water hole hunts in 2006 and 2007 and were 80% in 2008.

 Archery Elk (6 days)

Since we did not harvest any elk in 2008 with archery, we decided not to sell the elk hunts for 2009.  This may change for 2010.  Clients are welcome to put in for Archery Elk/Deer Combo license for $1,500.  If you have the chance to harvest an elk, there will be a $2,500 trophy fee.  If no elk is harvested, the price would only be the combo price of $2,500 Deer/Antelope.

We conduct these archery hunts during the peak rut weeks and hunt them much like we do our deer - from water hole blinds, brush blinds, or ladder stands set along trails.  We also call when possible.  During the rut, the cows congregate along the river botoms and alfalfa fields which brings the bulls down from the hills.
